Engineering Design

MegChem’s teams of experienced engineers (process, mechanical and piping) and project managers execute complex and challenging projects. Our individual and collective technical expertise of engineering resources, permit MegChem to deliver fit for purpose cost-effective solutions to clients. MegChem serves clients in the energy, oil and gas, petrochemical, mining and industrial segments.

MegChem utilizes a multi-discipline integrated systems approach for design. We are frequently called on to solve the most challenging problems in industry within constraints that varies from tight schedules, extremely harsh operating environments, to working on live equipment.

Whether it is a green fields project, an expansion, or an upgrade, our experience and capabilities encompass a wide range of plants and applications, which is available to our clients on a global basis.

MegChem’s in-house engineering capabilities enable us to provide a client with a total solution, including feasibility studies, conceptual engineering right through to detail engineering and construction / commissioning. Although a one stop turn-key solution may be provided, MegChem favours a phased approach when managing complex engineering projects. A phased approach during engineering is a systematic approach for the development of ideas, projects and business opportunities. A phased approach together with good front end planning reduces project risk and provides greater budget and schedule control. The phased approach followed by Megchem is described briefly below.

After the feasibility of the project or proposed solution is established, the project will enter the conceptual phase. During conceptual engineering a solution is developed that may be taken forward to the basic engineering phase. Conceptual engineering is divided into concept development and concept selection. Concept development involves developing ideas and options with the objective of ensuring that all alternatives have been identified and developed. Concept selection involves studying, screening and re-analyzing options until a concept can be selected for further processing and refinement during basic engineering.

During basic engineering the selected concept is optimized and a blueprint of the proposed solution is developed. The output of the basic engineering phase is a Basic Engineering Package (BEP), which defines all process details of the project. It is MegChem’s experience that a well developed BEP is one of the most significant contributors towards a well executed project.

The detail design engineering as per the approved BEP is completed by the involved engineering disciplines working as a design team under the overall management of the engineering manager allocated to the project. MegChem executes all engineering with the principal consideration for the health, safety and environmental well-being of all stakeholders.

Projects Execution

MegChem executes small to medium sized projects engaging with clients in various contracting strategies including EPCm, EPC and Turnkey. Our contribution could involve any portion of the typical project life cycle ranging from Concept Design, Basic Design, Detail Design, Procurement, Construction through to Commissioning. However, our main focus is on projects where the design component is substantial.

Project Managers are appointed to take control of the execution of each project and to ensure that the client’s project objectives are accomplished in terms of Cost, Schedule, Quality and Safety. A project office team executes all daily project activities in accordance with our ISO certified Quality Management System using Prolog® as backbone.

Due to our emphasis on projects involving multi-disciplinary design, we assign Engineering Managers to control design integrity and to manage inter-disciplinary design interfaces.
